The Best Ways to Use a Memory Foam Travel Pillow

We went on an epic road trip, over 40 hours of seatbelt-restrained bliss across the country. Reminiscing on the glory days of the good old fashioned American Road Trip, I had forgotten about the tough realities of life on the road. I needed a travel pillow that would be both comfortable and durable. Come learn about the travel pillow I used the most on this road trip, the Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow by Dot&Dot.

What is a Memory Foam Travel Pillow?

Memory foam has been used in tons of products, mostly in the leisure category but also in some medical products. So what is memory foam? Memory foam is a particular kind of soft padding that retains its form when compressed. It does not rely on flat stuffing throughout.

So unlike a traditional pillow, it does not bounce back to it’s fully fluffed form immediately after you lift yourself off. Thus, the term memory is used because it “remembers” the shape that it has been compressed into. The reason this is important is because you want form-fitting comfort for a variety of positions when you travel, not constantly fluffing a pillow or dealing with squished padding material.

The Twist Memory Foam Pillow is also a bendable “roll pillow”. This means that it is designed to have a longer pill-shaped form rather than a more traditional square or rectangular shape. It also features a foldover at the midpoint. There’s an inner core that helps maintain the form of the pillow, and it’s bendable. The core provides support, while the memory foam provides the cushy softness.

Why Choose a Memory Foam Travel Pillow?

So why choose the Twist Memory Foam Pillow? What is the best way to use a memory foam travel pillow? Who is most likely to benefit from a travel pillow?

Here is who is most likely to benefit:

  • Side sleepers
  • Road trippers
  • Train passengers
  • Plane riders
  • Working remotely at a desk
  • Anyone needing lumbar support

For travelers, it is compact, foldable, durable, fits a variety of situations. No need to bring a bulky bed pillow, as these can be annoying to stuff into a packed car or carry through an airport.

Plus, if you need to take a snooze between flights this works much better than laying on you arm until it falls asleep!

Also, having an inner core in your pillow is important for both compactness of storage as well as flexibility of seating arrangements (e.g., car versus airplane travel). The Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow comes with a convenient latch to help hold the pillow together at the ends for increased portability.

How to Use the Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow

I found the Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow to be pretty intuitive to use. It comes in an elongated “U” shape, connected at the top with a simple loop clasp. Unhook the clasp and then you can straighten the pillow to it’s unfolded pill-shape form. From here, the sky’s the limit with your creativity in how you want to bend the pillow to fit your needs.

I will admit, I thought that the center portion of the metal core was quite bendable though the rest of the bar did not hold form as easily. This makes sense, as the standard stored position is folded halfway so the “crease” is naturally going to be more present at that point.

However, it means that you may need to take some extra effort to fine-tune the folds of the outer edges. Grip the outside edge and you will be able to subtly notice where the inner core ends so you can adjust the tip to suit your position.

Be careful if you plan to use this pillow while you’re driving, as you don’t want to create an unsafe scenario where you could fall asleep at the wheel. Still, for drivers it can be great for extra lumbar support during long stretches at the wheel.

You’ve got plenty of options when it comes to travel pillows. I prefer the Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow because it is adaptable to many travel situations, remains compact, and gives more flexibility than standard neck pillows.

It’s not perfect, as the lower portions of the internal metal bar did not easily hold the precise form when you bend the roll. However, it still provides a very comfortable and user-friendly design that really did deliver on it’s travel-ready product description.

  1. I usually do not use travel pillows – put a crink in my neck – but memory foam looks like it may do the trick. I love sleeping on memory foam mattresses. Based on that comfort these travel pillows sound delightful; especially for an uber long road trip. All good reasons here.

Worth a try, particularly if you’ve tried other kinds without success. Happy Travels Ryan!
